Essay - Library Book Task/Reserach

MY CHOSEN ESSAY QUESTION.
1- Focussing on specific examples, describe the way that modernists
art & design was a response the forces of modernity.

Graphic design in the mechanical age.
Lupton, E. & Goldstein, D. & Rothschild, D. (1998) 'Graphic Design in the Mechanical age', Yale University Press, London.
To find out more about technology development through time, specifically related to Graphic Design and to put into context what and why certain machinery was made.

Graphic design history.
Heller, S. & Georgette, B. (2001) 'Graphic Design history',
Allworth Press, New York.
SHELF NUMBER: 741.605
Having a timeline to read through would be very useful when trying to identify how graphic Design altered and changed when influenced by various forces of modernity.

Type: a visual history of typefaces and graphic styles.
Purvis, A.W. & De Jong, C.W.  &  Tholenaar, J. (2009) ' Type: a visual history of typefaces and Graphic styles', Taschen, Cologne.

SHELF NUMBER: 655.2Because the practice of Typography is such a massive part of Graphic Design as a whole, I think this would be an interesting subject to research due to the changes in language, technology etc.

Graphic Design Referenced: a visual guide to the language, applications, and history of graphic design.
Vit, A. &  Gomez-Palacio, B.  (2009) 'Graphic design referenced: a visual guide to the language, applications, and a history of Graphic Design',
Rockport Publishers, USA.
SHELF NUMBER:
As well as a timeline, I think that this book would go more in-depth about the way in which language was visualised before wide spread literacy as well as technology.

Graphic design time line: a century of design milestones.
Heller, S.  &  Pettit, E. (2000) 'Graphic Design timeline: a century of design milestones'. Allworth Press, New York.
Similar to the other Graphic design history books, I think this will outline and enforce many different important periods in which Graphic design developed and evolved.
