Group Research (OUGD405)

26TH NOVEMBER 2012
OUGD405
GROUP RESEARCH.
RECYCLING.

As a group we were given the subject of recycling. We started to discuss what recycling was and things related to it as well as pointing out the many different forms the recycling process can take.

Designated bins.
Charity shops (Oxfam, Help the aged, RSPCA etc).
Plastic bottles, Cans, Glass, Clothing etc.
Compost (Food waist) .
Second Hand shops (Usually charity shops).
Online (Ebay, Gumbtree, Auto-trader, Facebook etc).

We were then asked to designate each other with one of these versions of recycling to further research. I decided to direct myself to the subject of composting. With the research I gather on this subject I will create 3 mood boards that I will have to present to the group on Friday in our Crits.

FURTHER RESEARCH
MY CHOSEN SUBJECT
COMPOST.
INITIAL THOUGHTS

COUNCIL RECYCLING - Designated bins / Bio-digradable / Mass recycling.
HOME RECYCLING - Compost heaps / Beneficial
T.V . - Gardeners World / Promotion / Celebs
BENEFITS - Nutrients / Health / No bad smells / enviromentally friendly
DECOMPOSITION - Mould / Rot / Decay

PRIMARY RESEARCH.
DESIGNBOARD 1.
I decided to take pictures of the food recycling bins and compost things we have around our home. Because we grow and eat our own vegetable, we do a lot of composting.

MASS FOOD WASTE RECYCLING.
Overall in our house we have three bins designated to recycling food waste.

1.     In the kitchen, close to the kettle got teabags, fruit bits and vegetable scraps.
2.     In the porch , as an overflow bin for the one in the pitch. This bin has a biodegradable bag supplied by the council.
3.     Outside on the drive so the overflow bin can be emptied into it were it is then taken away by bin men.

SECONDARY RESEARCH.
DESIGNBOARD 2.
I wanted to look into were our recycled food waste, collected by the council, ends up and how it is recycled. I looked on there 'recycle now' website to gather more information.

DIRECT RESEARCH.
DESIGNBOARD 3.
I wasn't so sure were to directs my compost research. through out my design board development I couldn't help think how discussing mould was but at the same time how amazing and also how beautiful it was. colours textures and its strive to live and grow

I was also interested in the different stages in which food objects decay and disform while the decompose.

I found it interesting how mould and deformities can repulse us when i come to food, However some well loved food stuffs are intact 'gone off'
Stilton / Blue cheese has mould yet this enhances the flavour giving it its unique taste.
Over-ripe / Black bananas are used to bake banana bread to enhance the sweet 'bananary' taste of the cake.

SPECIFIC RESEARCH.
HOW TO GET PEOPLE TO RECYCLE MORE.

NIKE.
RECYCLING SCHEMES.

I volunteered to take up the task of researching and developing the posters for Nike and Adidas as I have a lot of various foot ware as well as clothing.
I began with research on Nike and their stance on recycling. I started by going to the official Nike website - http://www.nike.com/gb/en_gb/?cp=EUNS_KW_UK_1_Brand_Core_Nike However there is no sign on anything to do with recycling.
OFFICIAL HOMEPAGE OF NIKE UK.

To try and find anything to do with recycling on their website I used the search engine.

SEARCH ENGINE BAR
 RESULTS WHEN SEARCHING 'RECYCLE'

After making a specific search for any recycling information related to this brand, the only related subject that came up was the USA Basketball team kit. This was because Nike made engineered this kit to enhance performance. As well as this they it’s made with 98% recycled polyester taken from used plastic bottles. Even though this is a positive thing, it does not help the public and consumers gain awareness on what they could do to take part in recycling.

I desided to use the Google search engine to see if i could find anything to do with recycling and Nike.

This website was the first page to come up after typing 'Nike Recycle' in to the Google.co.uk engine.
Worn out play on is a scheme that encourage people to hand in there old shoes to designated site so that they can then be recycled into different sporting grounds (Running track, Playgrounds, astroturf, etc.). At first I was impressed with the fact that they use sports foot ware to feed back into the sporting environment through pitches and tracks. However when I looked further into this subject I was disappointed to see that this scheme was very sparse across the country.
'NIKE GRIND & DROP OFF POINTS IN THE UK'.

NIKE DROP OFF POINTS

Seeing how few drop of points there are across the country is not very hopeful and lacks enticement for people to recycle their footwear. In London alone, our capital city, there are two! This enforces my feelings in that recycling regimes are present but very under promoted and not very accessible at all.
DROP OFF SITE IN LONDON

The fact that this nike shoe recycle website has no connection to the official Nike website what so ever seems bazar. you have to beed actively looking for a Nike recycling scheme to find this information instead of it just being present which means that many people are oblivious and un-aware to what is available to them.
Nike's public shoe recycle regime defiantly needs more promotion so that there popularity can influence consumers to take part in this environmental effort.
