Design for Print / Other Practitioners / Laser cut

OUGD504 / DESIGN FOR PRINT.
OTHER PRACTITIONERS.
LASER CUTTING.

ONE PERCENT

RYAN ROMANES

I like how the use of would has been utilised and decorated using a technique that uses the material rather than sticks something over the top of it. The sleek and clinical packaging and the product it is holding is also reflected through the clean use of a laser cutter and it uses precise measurements through the machine.

I SEE A DARKNESS

BRYAN TODD

I really like the way in which the accurateness of the laser cutting facility has been utilised to create such an intricate design. i feel that this would be a very good yeas when presenting a logo on a product rather than doing the normal thing of printing. I also like the fact that the 3d presence is actually there rather than creating type that looks 3d, i think this adds depth and uniqueness to a design.

LASER CUT SAVE THE DATE

CARLI FOOT

I like how the laser cutting technique has been used here to expose the surface underneath. i think this give of the ethos of a hand crafted, natural and organic feel that my be helpful to my product as the printing methods are hands on rather than digital.

 BUSINESS CARDS

ULE GRINEVICIUTE

I like the unusual use of material used for these business cards. i feel they give of a very straight forward and down to earth personality that the person hang them out may have. I think that the fact that the card is corrugated cardboard also shows a robustness and would also be cheap to manufacture in bulk.

Lecture 6 / Globalisation, Sustainability and The Media

21 / 11 / 13
DESIGN CONTEXT / OUGD501
GLOBALISATION, SUSTAINABILITY AND THE MEDIA.
LECTURE 6.

One unified culture is taking over.
Definitions of Globalisation - Socialist / Capitalist

Globalisation was a desirable aim, to encourage everybody to work together.
Capitalism is when****

Globalisation  is about consciousness and awareness on things outside of your direct environment. America is the Global heart of Capitalism.

This logical conclusion of Globalisation is the idea of recognising one single culture.

Cultural Globalisation - A byproduct of capital market expanding that has spread across all countries.

'Mcdonaldisation' - Multi layer concept
The idea that these big companies are present in all countries all over the world. Reflects the idea of fast food vs. slow food with out care of time or family mea time or health. It also refuses to the work in American culture which is a job that no body else want to do as there is not much gain personally or financially.

tHE PROCCESS OF A SPREAD OF a SPECIFIC FORM OF SOCIETY

Marshall McLuhan (1964)

New technologies will have a massive effect on society in the way we interact with each other. They are extensions of our seances. We can now here stuff that is on the other side of the world as distance and time is no longer an issue (The global embrace) The ability to relate to everybody in the world gives a great sense of Harmony. It is an implosion as the world has suddenly shrunk to become a global village.

He wrote these philosophies before the internet was event bought about which almost makes him a prophesy as he had already predicted that something like this would occur as technology developed.

There is some things that suggest that this has not really happened. It seems that we have become desensitised from the harsh images and stores we hear. We are not a Global tribe and technology has not succeeded to this prophesy as we are now competitive and this caused a cultural war. Radical islam is an example of this as they feel that their whole life system has been destroyed by the strive to have a global society that are of the same culture.

Under this system you have a lot of problems such as national identity (what is it to be British?). There is also accountability. The government used to have control over companies and industries. However when these companies gained more power this was no longer the case of companies in other countries were regulated differently and perhaps not a strictly. If you stop restrictions on companies, a lot of money is made however not distributed.

With the spread of business around the globe, this one culture is also being spread around the globe.

CULTURAL IMPERIALISM
Everyone has the same stuff as well access to the same information.
- Media Conglomerted operate as olipolies (A giant cluster of businesses)
All of these are derived form America.

Time Warner - American company
This company is an umbrella to hundreds of other companies that run form internet servers, telecom and television channels etc. all this media is controlled by this one company which in turn implies that they are in control to what is delivered through these medias that are very influential to peoples lives.

News corporation divide up countries in consideration of there market importance.
There is not as much money to be made in the least influential countries and their markets such as Africa and india. Because of this people that are with in these less influential countries are subject to values that are portrayed by the countries that offer more money through the media.

The american culture of 'you are what you own' has been delivered to not only western culture but also to countries like africa wholes people are now taking in and taking on this culture even though that are some of the poorest people on the planet.

Big Brother
Markets use the same ideas and subject and rebrand it every year.

The biggest growth industry in India is skin whitening cream. this is because through the Media the american appearance is seen as desirable were people that are not originally from this culture have been overwhelmed by this western influence.

Chomsky & Herman (1998)
Manufacturing consent
Who ever has been exposed to popular culture have had this influence of being told what you should look like and how life should be.

We watch the news - this is how we no whats going on. However the news system are perhaps one of the biggest part of the capitalist system.

OWNERSHIP
A large percentage of out news paper asre dominated by one man (Rupert urdoch) His agenda is to make as much money as possible. most of these papers are very self serving rather than talking about things that are going on in the world. They promote services and companies that Murdoch also owns and makes money from.

If you newspaper back us - we will slacken the restrictions on legislation in the media.
These people have an emence power in how society works.

SOURCING
Journalists cannot be free with what they report as they are controlled by the political systemms that are in place. if they ask questions that are too harsh or report on something that is not approved, they will loose their jobs and credibility.

FLAK - Founding in lobby groups that come up with funding and laws to get what they want and to spread there take on the world.

THE GLOBAL CLIMATE COALITION
Seems like an activist company, however they are a lobby group for large oil and energy firms that get stories into newspapers and tv to help destroy voices of decent that would slag off the way in which tha larger oil and energy companies work.

Propaganda disguised as news.

Relating to creatives, Big businesses have realised that the visual image is a big influence on every bodies live. A lot of compaign groups are using visual medias to inform and  influence people and the views they could have.

'An inconvenient Truth' - Documentary film on the effects of global warming.

Even though there are many surveys and studies that prove global warming is happening, many people still deny this is happening.
The richer countries have the most influence on Global warming as we use more factories, oil and power.

To save the planet its not to over throw the richer planets, we have to release less O2 and plant more greenery. These troubles that have been caused by capitalism and these issues are now trying to be resolved by capitalism as they are making people buy new products in order for the evrey-man to 'play their part'.

An attempt to sustainable design, however it is more expensive to buy due to this larger investment. Companies are not bothered about larger influences of the world.

These plants are usually placed on cheap land and really effects communities surrounding it in a negative way.

GREEN WASHING
There is now utilisation of people that are concerned about the effects of Global warming and it has turned into its own market were buyers are made to think they are banking a choice that is beneficial to the world.

McDonalds changed the background of its logo to green to indicate that they are a globally, environmentally aware product and company so as to draw people in.

Sustainable design that has no impact on the environment as well as insuring there is now unfair layout through out manufacture.

The way to solve the environmental issues is not to buy more, it is to challenge the companies that have created this issue in the first place.

Print Chronologies / Presentation talk

15 / 11 / 13
DESIGN FOR PRINT / OUGD504
PRINT CHRONOLOGIES.
PRESENTATION TALK / AMBER

'If its true its printed' - Print is correct and factual.

When information is conveyed and spread through word of mouth, this information can change, However if it is printed the information cannot me changed and remains consistent and affirmative.

PRINT - Documentation / communication / Reproduction

The earliest for of print originated from the far east around 200AD. It allows specific information to travel and stay the same when presented to many different people/

The first prints resembling books usually originated through the subject of religion. Religion attracts individuals in to become part of a community in which the can find comfort and relations. Religion also generated money.

'Knowledge is power' - The more you know the more you realise you don't know.
Feeding peoples curiosities through education.
Higher classes in society could read therefor they could access more knowledge and gain more power. Religious beliefs were fuelled causing this segregation with in the classes and knowledge gained by the most powerful in the higher classes would then trickle down through the lower classes beneath.

The output generated through printed material is huge. As printers evolved and technology changed and developed the more information was distributed.
The printed material changed the world and took it from being a society that relied on a spoken environment and made it into one that relied on a visual environment

Usually through the act of speaking, the manner in which the information was spoken was defines be tone, gestures and volume.

The involvement of punctuation was tailored to this visual culture so it was understood the way in which the information should be received.

McLuhan - A global village that concentrated on the love for community and also predicted the creation of the world wide web well before his time.
Even though are language changes, the written version still remains the same.
Individualism / Democracy / Capitalism / Nationalism - Pivotal to society that print pushed.

Lino type - instead of tripe setting, you can now manually create the words that can then be made into a block.

Key board development - Traditional printing methods starting to be replaced by computers. highly skilled technicians and workers lost interest and jobs very quickly as a result of this new method.

Etching - Originated and developed from the time in which armour was decorated and personalised.

William Morris (Asian influence through pattern and colour)
A time of over decoration that was shown through art and architecture. Not based on the use of communication more about aesthetic decoration.

1870 / Propoganda / Advertising (US Navy)
The war changed everything and budget became considerable when designing and deciding on methods of print.
the Us navy promoted war time through visual posters that depicted modernism inspired designs that used clean lines and crisp colours. this promoted that being in the army is a cool thing showing it in a light hearted depiction when intact it was a horrific situation to be in as a soldier.

2010 / The daily Star - Mass deliverance of print and publication can be dangerous. The paper thrived off patriotic opinions and protest. People think because it is in the paper, the information and vibe given is true. This can have a very negative effect on society in the information is bias or un-true.

1990 / Andre the Giant - fighting 'Jake the snake' who brought out the snake to the ring to which Andre the Giant had a phobia. he was ridiculed after his reaction and eventually lost his contract with the WWF. As this star reclined from the spotlight, the Urban brand 'Obey' took the image of his face and used it as their identifying logo. this gave a sense that this one time famous wrestle had a secret society of followers through the street art style of branding.

The street style image of Obama that emerged through out his Campaign to be president was used to intrigue and attract the younger ad more underground supporters that had not previously been acknowledged through the voting process. this image became relatable to the younger generations.

Seminar 5 / First things First / Study Task 5

11 / 11 / 13
OUGD502 / CONTEXT OF PRACTICE.
FIRST THINGS FIRST.
SEMINAR 5.

FIRST THINGS FIRST
1st GROUP

-Ken Garland is getting bogged down with menial matters that are unimportant in his own opinion were as he would much prefer to be designing.

- Founder of DandAD, however left after it be came to commercial.

- Designed for social causes.

- Rather took part in more functional, educational, free and helpful design for society farther than packaging, promotion and advertising of useless items.

- Design with a purpose.

- He reassures his making of toys by stating he does not want to take the fun out of design however he is concerned about the reversal of priorities.

- He doesn't want to over through consumer culture, he would rather there would be more awareness of priorities.

FIRST THINGS FIRST (1964 - 2000)
2nd GROUP

- More urgent need for change as  the use of commercial design has gone from small menial object to greater and more expensive products such as cars, jewellery and designer products. The things that are targeted are now becoming more harmful on the consumer world and are seen as unethical, for example, the promotion of things such as alcohol, cigarettes and items that have been manufactured by children in sweatshops.

- There is a much wider audience.

- There is more recognition on how designing for commercialism has effects society and the pressure put on the consumer audience.

- Its not just a reworded manifesto, it states the up to date opinions and facts on how society has been manipulated.

- Consumerism is becoming more and more out of control and must be challenged as it has not been in the past.

- Consumers are becoming numb to believes and purposes to there own lives and being taken over by the consumption of overly promoted items that are meaningless.

- No longer design with a purpose it is design activism.

FIRST THINGS FIRST (REVISITED)
(OUR GROUP) INITIAL THOUGHTS

- Background on the original manifesto and how it was received by different people by expressing thoughts and experiences.

- We are more interested in the images with in the ad rather than the message being portrayed or the context in which it is being said.

- Even if you take the opinion of not being interested in politics, you are still involved in the political cycle and will have and effect by contributing through your work.

- You cannot escape the fact that you are with in the political cycle but you need to be aware on the effect you have when you work is out in society.

- More of a campaign run designer

- Claims that designers our day only design for commercial uses that are useless and meaningless rather than designing for subjects of substance and importance.

- Advertising and promotion rather than education and awareness.

- Many designers feel that design is outside the concern of politics.

MICHAEL BEIRUT (2007)
4th GROUP

- A critique of the politicked 21st century Manifesto in defence of the way he works and how he earns money.

- The most recent manifesto has been written on very bias terms.

- People that signed the manifesto are designers that worked with in cultural institutes such as museums. These people have not taken part in consumerist design so they do not have strains that less-renouned designer have when trying to make money to live. Having riches and status mean you can have freedom in the work you produce rather than taking any job you cn get to earn a living.

- The most oppressed are designers that have to be a part of the consumerist product however they are not a part of the decisions behind the ethos of the product they are just there to make it look nice.

- If people like the way something is why would you augur against it?

- Graphic design is not a wider part in the process, it is a small aspect.

- it more dangerous for designer not to be a part of the field than it is for them to be there. Whats the point of dropping out of commercial design. Its less ethical to drop out (Similar to when you go on holiday and ask your self why would you leave? You know you will because it won't change anything in the world if you do drop out) If you are a part of the system then you can work with in it.

- The content of the design with in Ad Busters is an easy way to gain attention through shock. Designs that are integral to our society such as the nutrition label on food will never win awards even though it is very successful in doing its job.

- He claims that the original proposal was not for the use of a manifesto.

- There is no clear good cause anymore. commercially promoting non-profitable organisations even if they have been founded by people that have made there money from controversial beginnings.

- There are no clear choices and you have to pick your own way through your design work.

- Disappointed that it has been sated that propaganda for capitalism would be taken over by propaganda for anti-capitalism as this would not really be helpful to anybody with in society.

There are important aspects with in both augments for the manifesto to the argument that challenges the ethics behind it.

Write a critical discussion on the first things first manifesto / triangular discussion.
Base the discusstion on 2 existing pieces of Graphic Design.

Triangulation - three opinions give a more correct answer (two is just back and forth).

Think about possible subjects that you would wish to base your essay on:

- Globalisation ( Internation / perspective)
- Social change
- Form / Function
- Sustainability
- Consumerism.

STUDY TASK 5
TRIANGULATION

WILLIAM HILL PROMOTION / FIG1

WILDLIFE CAMPAIGN / FIG 2

A number of authors have considered  the relation of ethics and Design and how Creatives should conduct themselves and their work regarding the consumerist culture. Authors Garland, (1964), Poyner, (1951) and Bierut, (2007) have discusses the negative connotations of Graphic design talent is being used for purely commercial benefits rather than for the ethical and integral reason. For instance, in the original First things First Manifesto (1964) Garland states that talent is being waisted as it is being focused and used for trivial and menial purposes and remains this way due to the recognition and reward given for this type of design. This is supported by The Addbusters renewal of the First things First Manifesto i which it is stated that Consumerism is running uncontested and is unconsciously provided for by Creatives and designer alike. This need to be contested.

According to these views presented, The Promotional piece shown in FIG 1 would be completely unacceptable as it is promoting a business and culture that causes a lot of damage to people lives. Whether the designer involved did not understand the implications of this work or was simply doing their job, this is a very unethical use of graphic design. on the other hand the piece of campaign promotion shown in FIG 2 was created for free by the cause and is to bring awareness to issues that often go unnoticed in our society. the way in which this exotic animal has been placed in a situation that we are familiar with in society, this helps to put the issue into perspective. The design house that created this range of campaign promotion worked on be-half of a charity with no gain for themselves personally.

In some what of opposing views, Bierut speaking in 2007, not so much defends the actions of consumer absorbed design, but gives reason for the lack of change. He mesons the fact that the people that signed the original manifesto are designers that worked with in cultural institutes such as museums. These people have not taken part in consumerist design so they do not have strains that less-renouned designers have when trying to make money to live. Having riches and status mean you can have freedom in the work you produce rather than taking any job you can get to earn a living. He also explains that the relationship between Graphic Design and consumerism is a lot more complex than what the original manifesto discusses. There is no clear good cause anymore. Designers can commercially promote non-profitable organisations, even if they have been founded by people that have made there money from controversial beginnings.

Using this opinion from Beriut, Looking at FIG 1, the designers and creatives behind this promotion are just there to earn money to live, pay their rent and go food shopping. It is on the Company its self that have to deal with the unethical nature of their business, they are the ones that have looked to a Graphic designer to do the job they are good at by interacting with tis specific audience. The design does not appeal to the glamorous side of the betting world were, if successful, you can gain a lot of money. It remains on a level that is relatable to the potential audience that show passion within a sport they love. This could be seen, however, as manipulation through a more personal and therefor more intrusive appeal to legitimate feelings of pride. You are proud of what you support so you are willing to bet money on them to show that support and trust they will in turn come through for you.

Lecture 6 / Ethics - What is Good?

14 / 11 / 13
OUGD501 / CONTEXT OF CONTEXT
ETHICS - WHAT IS GOOD?
LECTURE 6.

We live with in a fundamentally unfair system. Capitalism is based on exploration. How do we go through life being ok with this system and making the most of what we have.
How as a creative professional, do you work trough ethics and society.

Written by a designer called Ken Garland. It was produced in the boom of consumerism that came close after the war. it is written and signed by designers and art directors that had become frustrated in the fact that man designers and creative professional were working on menial products such as toothpaste or cat food.

They say in is un-ethical to waist talent and designers should use there skill for useful means such as education.

The original manifesto was re-published by the company 'Adbusters' there are very revolutionist movement that get their points across though active manipulation of existing ads.
in this re-draft the tone changes. it is not only about the waste of creative talent, it is more vicious its approach by demeaning advertising and what is does. The image below is of a quote from this redraft
This starts to say that the market and capitalist system are a sort of taking out the most talented designers and bribing them with moNey to put false truths and over promotion to their products.

They through together many types of creatives labelling them as unethical people that trick consumers into buying things that are useless to people tat are already strapped for cash. Some products are more unethical than others, but it states that if you are a single part in this product and how it is sold, then you are responsible for the negative effect this can have on the public. It seen as a global exploitation.

As a creative you are effect the way people look at each other and the selfs. Which can be damaging depending on what this is being presented.
How do you decide what is worthy. the tone of voice through this redraft is very damning of creatives however does not take in to consideration the need to work for the need to live that designers and creatives have to take. Of course it would be great if you could always work in the educational sense of or a charitable cause but this does not allow you to earn enough to live.

If you work in any way through a company that endorses and supplies costumer items then you are being unethical.

Just because you are working for a company means that you are as one with the ethics and products this company supply. Many of these people that apply this extreme ethical approach to the there work and who they choose to work with are more often than not extremely rich and have the means and ability to take on this kind of work.

If this is a call to make the system a more balanced then this can be a very positive movement, however placing the woes off capitalism that have been conjured by large scale companies and brands is not right.
Appropriate adverts that are informing society on the evils of consumerism. The images above are examples of 'mean war fair' that the Adbusters movement use.

A mean is something that stick in your head and circulate around the world virally. this is an emanse power that designed have created. What could happen if this power of message could be used to make changes with in the social set up?

It is argued that the designer and creative have nothing to do with the choices that companies make regarding the ethics and fairness of there product and how it is sold as well as were and how it is produced.

Adbusters work applies loosely to the theory that tried to formulate and broad anti-capitalis design with the though that design 'could save the world' do to the power it has. In the book above, Papanek makes the same augment that is present through the manifesto. Through this book there is a cry for ethics.
This quote is a very extreme version, He sees a grand use for designers in wanting them to use their talents for subjects that can change the world and how we live with in society.
He made this example of a car. The car company it had been directed at had issues concerinig a bumper that had been deemed as un safe. he made this cars bumper out of wood and beer cans costing him no more than 50$ to make the pint that s****
Creatives just tinker with the tip of the iceberg. They do not use there skills in real and effective ways.

You can't just escape capitalism as it is the state we live in and have been brought up in.
Even though we have to be a part of this society and work for the things we need, it is still possible to make choices about your work that can lessen the impact regarding ethics.

Subjective Relativism

– There are no universal moral norms of right and wrong.
– All persons decide right and wrong for themselves.

Cultural Relativism
–The ethical theory that what’s right or wrong depends on place and/or time.
(If everyone does it and thats what is the norm then it is ok).

Divine Command Theory
–Good actions are aligned with the will of God.
–Bad actions are contrary to the will of God.
–The holy book helps make the decisions.
(Religion determines the choices you make)

I. Kant (philosiphere)
the things that determine us from animals is the though process of meaning and self deliberation. He was one of the first people that tried to work out how we decide what is ethical and what isn't.

the categorical imperative:

Act only from moral rules that you can at the same time universalise.
If you act on a moral rule that would cause problems if everyone followed it then your
actions are not moral.
(For example, if you chose never to give to charity, what would happen ice everyone did the
same and nobody gave to charity. sometime in your life you would be reliant on some kind
charitable act, so it unethical to not return this.)
-what action you take means and if others can repeat this act willingly.

Act so that you always treat both yourself and other people as ends in themselves, and
never only as a means to an end.
–If you use people for your own benefit that is not moral

Similar to Kant.
his augment was how much emotion your action achieves. It is based of the use that you action has with in society. If it increases general happiness, then it is ethical. if in decreases general happiness then its is bad and unethical. However sometimes you can do something you think is good, however it turns out bad and vise-versa.
If you don't tell the truth then you are unethical, however this does not always work for the best.

The social contract.
Thomas Hobbes (1603-1679) and Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778)
An agreement between individuals held together by common interest
Avoids society degenerating into the ‘state of nature’ or the ‘war of all against all’ (Hobbes)
“Morality consists in the set of rules, governing how people are to treat one another, that rational people will agree to accept, for their mutual benefit, on the condition that others follow those rules as well.”
We trade some of our liberty for a stable society.

The augment that is everyone did what everyone wants, then everyone will just compete with each other and screw each other over. We need a social contact that makes it cable to live together with equal and fair surroundings and possibilities.
What you have here is a formulation on how you can perceive what is good or not. have a workable yet ethical theory.

SOCIALLY AND ECOLOGICALLY RESPONSIBLE DESIGN.

Behind the generalisation, was genially design as a vehicle to help save society. He was against the 1st world  designers that are educated going to  3rd world country and being deemed as a kind of God who would help with a problem and then disappear again.

NOT DESIGN OF INDIVIDUAL GAIN / BUT FOR GREATER GAIN.

He suggests that ethical practice should be a part of your work, while you are working to gain money, devote 10% of your time to charitable and ethical causes. It doesn't ether how this 10 percent is included, it could be 1 day out of 10 or 1 year out of 10.

THINGS TO REMEMBER

The assets of the worlds top three billionaires are greater than those of the poorest 600 million on the planet
More than a third of the worlds population (2.8 billion)live on less than two dollars a day
1.2 billion live on less than one dollar a day
In 2002 34.6 million Americans lived below the official poverty line (8.5 million of those had jobs!) Black American Poverty double that of whites
Per capita income in sub-Saharan Africa =$490
Per capita subsidy for European cows = $913
