Post-Modernist

OUGD401
CONTEXT OF PRACTICE
POST-MODERNIST GRAPHIC DESIGN.

'GRAND PEDATEUR - GESTAMMELORCHTER - SUPAGLUE'
MUSIC ALBUM PREMOTION - 2011.

DAMIEN TRAN

IMAGE

Even though this is a very contemporary poster print, I believe it is very under the influence of the post-modernist culture. This piece looks hand rendered and the miss-matched design leaves its hard to understand and interpret any meaning. The only way of knowing the purpose of this print is from the typography at the bottom. The main focus of the Poster has been made up of many different layers varying in colour, shapes, sized and textures. I think the fact that this is just something that looks nice means it goes against the 'form follows function' principle the bauhaus introduced during the the Modernist era of design.

'GOD SAVE THE QUEEN - ALBUM COVER'
THE SEX PISTOLS - 1977

JAMIE REID

IMAGE

This piece was a display of rebellion created during the rising of punk culture. The album cover mirror imaged the disorder Punk brought to the scene through other elements such as music and fashion. By taking the revered portrait of the Queen and de-facing it in such a harsh way showed great disregard and disrespect for authority and also intimidated common value (of the time). This is a strong example of post moderninsm not only through its meaning but also through its aesthetic. The use of mismatched typography cut outs go against the clean clear modernist principles as well as the un even layout. It shows experimentation which, in its self, steps out of what has been set and established before hand by the Modernist culture.

'NUDO ENCUENTRO DE CREADORES'

LACASCARAAMARGA

IMAGE

This piecse of Graphic design has a very disjoined feel to it. The layout seems very disorganised as main features look as though they have been dismantled which hinder the fluidity and create an almost uncomfortable, awkward feel.

'THE PORTLAND MERCURY- TIME BASED ART FESTIVAL'
AUGUST 2011.

DAVID CARSON

IMAGE

David Carson is well known for his rebellion against the modernist culture. As a 'Graphic Designer he thrives on challenging the principle of 'form follows function'. He experiments  with mixing medias as well as using many forms of typography in single peices of work. Many of his works have been created for him 'Raygun' magazine and come in the form of cover, pages and double page spreads. His lack of consideration for layout and legibility makes his work look messy and confusing which many Graphic designers frown upon.

'ID MAGAZINE - COVER'

The bright and brash style of this magazine cover indicates that it is a piece of post modernist Graphic Design. As well as a mix of bold colours there is also a few different typography styles used, some even looked hand drawn. These two characteristic goes against the form follows function principle as it makes it difficult to read the text. There is not much of a set layout and the fact the girl in the image is making an offensive gesture indicates a rebellious ethos.
