CRITICAL ANALYSIS.CONTEXT OF PRACTICE - SESSION 1.
CONTEXT - The background of the subject.
PRACTICE - Your development and experimentation.
PROFESSIONALISM - What you want to become.
EVALUATION - Runs through out all 3 aspects.
5 reasons why critical analysis is an important part of education, learning and developing your understanding.
- Analysing other peoples work supplies you as a designer with your own opinions and enhances them so you can then justify your reasons for liking or disliking curtain pieces of work.
- This will also help you find your own personal style
- Your own design skills can be improved therefor your design work will also benefit.
- It can help bring a balance to your work as the unsuccessful aspects can be identified and worked on and the successful aspects can be acknowledged.
- Getting used to critically analysing your work now means that in the future your professional will be aided by your automatic response to justify and improve your work.
Identify and explain why the crit (group critique) is useful in the development of your work, skills and opinions.
- You can get constructive feed back from your tutors and peers which can then be capitalised on when looking to improve your work.- Being surrounded by people who are interested in the same specialist area you are, you can bounce and feed off these individuals, gathering more understanding and discovering things you may not have much knowledge about.
- You can test work you have been creating during critical analysis. Gathering these opinions through your own questioning and your peers can help you adjust a alter work before deadline so it is the most successful it can be.
- Having your own work critically analysed means you can get other peoples views, angles and interpretations which can feed into your practice. Through this discussion and questioning, his can help you understand and justify reasons for making the decisions you have.
The way in which we judge work visually can be categorised in quite a few different ways. I have chosen 5 criteria from the list that was created during this session and will use my images to explain these examples.

COLOUR.
Colour is a very important part of design and can influence an audience even before they have taken in what is actually being presented. As well as effecting the immediate response, colour can also play a big part in portraying ethos.
I like the use of colour in Graphic design, However believe that the most successful pieces abide by a limited colour scheme not exceeding more than 3 or maximum 4 colours.
1. KEN LO
IDENTITY & PACKAGING DESIGN.
Using black as the main colour is a very bold statement. I believe it give a richness to the products which also portrays a sense of class and almost exclusiveness. this boldness is enhanced by the simple and clean typography applied in white. This contracts against the dark stock making the identity of the company very crisp and clear. the overall purpose of this packaging is to enhance the beauty of the food it is storing. T black packaging brings out the colours of the food inside making them look fresh and more desirable.
2. TOMAS NILSSON
MUSIC VIDEO ANIMATION.
Through out this animation the background colours change every nown and then but stay flat and slightly opaqued. This is so the important characters in the stay as the main focus of the animation. This make the informational video very clean and clear allowing the audience to visually understand everything being displayed.
3. DAVID CARSON
MAGAZINE LAYOUT.
The main colours in this spread are white, black and red. Usually a limited colour scheme helps the audience read and understand the information being displayed. However, because there are a few photographic images consisting od several different colours interfering and overlapping the type layout, it puts off concentration and distracts the reader.
4. REAL SPICE & PFC
TAKE-AWAY MENU
The dark background of the front cover helps the bright red and yellow type to stand out making is easy to read for customers. However inside the menu, the background has been created with opaqued photographs which contain a few different colours. This takes away from the small text making it harder to read. Even though the background of this menu does not help the legibility of the information. The headings of each section of the menu have been high lighted in red which indicate to the customer what category of food they are looking at.
LAYOUT.
Layout is a very important part of successful Graphic design. It decided whether the contents with in the design is clear and understandable to the audience. The layout of a design can also influence the flow of image of typography therefore effecting the feeling the viewer get when looking at it.
FUNCTION.
How well something functions is very important to the success of a piece. If something functions well and seamlessly it can be understood without effort.
QUALITY OF EXICUTION.

1. KEN LO
IDENTITY & PACKAGING DESIGN.
When looking at this work as a design proposal, the layout of each aspect of the food range is very clear and well spaced. each part is well aligned giving the presentation a harmonic, uniform and consistent feel (this is important when establishing a business).
When looking at the actual design of the identity, the layout is very clean and simple which will also reflect on the food being sold.
2. THOMAS NILLSON
MUSIC VIDEO ANIMATION
Lay out its a very important aspect and i think that because this aspect has been applied in a very successful way. The layout helps the extensive information given clarity and understandability to the viewer. The way in which each image and text appears in motion and is placed on the screen is very methodical enhancing the simple yet strong structure.MUSIC VIDEO ANIMATION
3. DAVID CARSON
MAGAZINE LAYOUT.
To me, it looks as if this magazine spread has tried to follow a layout however fails in may parts. some of the body text has been placed in columns, however many of these are sporadically placed about the page. Much of the decorative type and imagery obstruct the information given which hinders the readability.
4. REAL SPICE & PFC
TAKE-AWAY MENU
Even though the layout of this piece is is well structured, I think it is the the sheer amount of information being given that over complicates it. I feel that the inside of the menu is marginally better in layout than the front. The front page is very sporadic were the typography is concerned this with slogans and names aligned each side of the page as feel as down the middle and down the right hand side. The different colours and sizes to these individual bits of text also hinder the flow of the layout.

1. KEN LO
IDENTITY & PACKAGING DESIGN.
I feel that the message behind this packaging and identity design is to show off and enhance the food products they are holding. I feel that the strong black of the paper material used draws focus on the food (as this has more texture and colour). This gives off the message 'no nonsense, just good food'. This makes is intriguing and inviting as it has a kind of innocent ethos behind it.
2. THOMAS NILLSON
MUSIC VIDEO ANIMATION
I feel that even though this is a visual display of a story to accompany music, there is also a hidden function given through it in the way it is being delivered. i think it is communicating something common in a whole new way and this gives it new intrigue. I think it is a its function is to re-invent something old and changing peoples perceptions.
3. DAVID CARSON
MAGAZINE LAYOUT.
Im not entirely sure on what the function of this magazine page because i feel the layout hinders it. I can only assume that the function to this spread is to inform its audience on a subject tied to the magazine ethos. however i believe that the its function has been off putted and jeopardised by the layout, decoration and colour.
4. REAL SPICE & PFC
TAKE-AWAY MENU
The function to this menu is to inform its audience to what food is available to order from their restaurant. i feel that they have been over the top with the decoration and imagery of food and this is off putting to the viewer (especially through the poor quality of the photographs of the food).
