DEMOCRATIC LECTURE.CRAIG OLDHAM.
GRADUATED FROM FALMOUTH.
LETS GET BACK TO BASICS: WHAT IS GRAPHIC DESIGN?
EMOTIONAL AND LOGICAL/RATIONAL.
- Away to cut unnecessary aspects out of design creating a stronger piece.
- Applying emotion creates relate-ability as well as different perceivement.
Identify what you want to do and what you are good at, then find others that have the same interests.
BRANDING.
Its ubiquitous....
People dont understand the context they are branding for.
' THE DEEPER YOU DIG THE HIGHER YOU RISE. AND THAT WHERE YOUR BRAND WILL COME FROM'
PORTFOLIO'S.
- Designing a portfolio is difficult. Even if you have a great portfolio you will have recipitents that do not like your work. you have to be prepared for this. Let you portfolio do as much talking as possible so you don't tie yourself in knots when trying to explain. regurgitating and copying others won't help you. be your own person.
- Even though there are hundred of potential designers for one job you need to be confident in yourself that you are better.
- Experience in an agency is very beneficial in gaining knowledge on how the industry works.
- You can only get better through these experiences and gaining of knowledge.
Meeting new people and working along side interesting people build bridges in the business.
- Your more likely to get a job when you have the experience of placements listed in your CV.
- If your job is to make tea for the first few days see this as a nice settled way of gaining a way in and become familiar in the workspace.
- Don't let people take the piss out of you. Don't stay on in the placement if you are not going upwards in getting a real position.
GETTING A PLACEMENT.
- Have a hit list.
- Aim high because the worst you can get is a no.
- Research everything, make sure the agency you apply to is somewhere appropriate.
- Look up and familiarise your self with the agencies work and ethics.
- Be punctual, be enthusiastic, be yourself, be the first there, spell there name right!!
- If you can't do something then don't cover it up and lie, be honest!
DESIGN ISNT A JOB.
- 20% of your day is dedicated to design, the rest is meetings, emails, phone calls etc.
- Design is about people.
YOUR PERSONALITY AND THE ABILITY TO MAKE RELATIONSHIPS WORK IS A MASSIVE FACTOR IN YOUR EMPLOYABILITY.
DESIGN IS ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS.
THAT IS YOUR JOB.
