CONTEXT OF PRACTICE / OUGD501
PRACTICAL PEICE.
PROPOSED WEB PRESENCE.
I decided to create a website in order to in order to offer information accompanying the statements that are present on the posters. I feel that I couldn't create questioning posters and then not justify and explain why the public should be aware of the subject of social control.
Even though this started out as a kind of campaign, i did not want it to turn into something that roused unhappiness and invoke some kind of action. I wanted to have this campaign to just bring awareness of what is actually going on in society.
This is a similar way in which i feel I have benefited from knowing the concept and opinions of theorist such as Berger, Frued and Coward as well as the application of these theories in everyday life. The realisation of the influences of social control has allowed me to see thing differently and I feel that this is something that everyone should be aware of. This is not to demand a change but to basically understand influences that are in play unconsciously to the public which could in turn make the audience consider choices they make in the future regarding consumerism.
I wanted the webpage to be simple and more like a presence weather than a working page. I started to look at layouts for a home page.
I used an image of a busy shopping street because I feel it portrayed the channeling of mass numbers of people due to the surrounding of high street shops. I feel this is a nice symbolisation of social control as the people with in the image are unaware of this conformity just like how many of us are in everyday life.
Using the same type and features in the posters I experimented with layout and comosition of the page.
I also added in the definition of social control so the understanding is made straight away after reading the question on the poster which has lead them to this page through the qr code.
Because this webpage is a presence, the navigational tools would work mainly on a scroll or times action which means the information would flick through each page after an adequate amount of time to read the information.
Like the posters, I would dedicated the specific images to the specific information that is being symbolised.
The introduction of the first point is based on the freedom of choice issue and I have recreated the diagram used in some of my initial research. the logos present represent the large corporations that actually control the food and erik products that are available to us.
Here is an example of how the navigation would work on this page regarding the display of information.
For an example I used something that I had discovered through out my research. The point about nestle have large shares in the brand, body shop is a big eye opener to the fact that many of the large corporations have their hands in all sorts or products showing they have more control than first thought.
it is this point that needed the most presentation of information. With the others I wanted to use the inspiration quotes taken from my research and essay and what the posters are based on. This way as well as learning something new, the focus of the posters and the type presented is fully understandable.
'Next time your getting ready to go out in public, ask yourself, why did did I choose the clothes I am wearing? Why have to put make up on?
The reason many women of today are so self consious regarding their apperance is actually derived by unconcious pressure created by men and this has been created over centuries. Once seen as inferior, women wanted to enhance beuty to appear desirable to the superior male.'
This is the explanation given, it takes more of a personal feel as it asks the audience a question regarding the choices they make then give and explanation that really makes you think about these choices.
'Conformity is induced through repetition and habit. By offering the same things over and over we become detached from possibilities outside of what is presently seen as popular.
Buy purchasing products that we are made to believe are desirable, in turn, makes ourselves desirable lulling us into a false sence of satisfaction through consumerism.'
The explanation is accompanied by the influential quote.
'Setting goals in life for people to prove themselves successful and in the driving seat gives a false sence of power.
For example having a car as a representation of status is nothing more than a illusion. No matter how powerful the engine, adeering to speed limits is the law.
A Fiat Punto can can make the same journey as a Rolls Royce.'
