PRACTICAL PEICE.
PROGRESS OF IDEAS.
The progression of my initial idea was to package alcohol in away that puts off the consumer to by the alcohol based product. The would be executed through off putting packaging that bring about the realisation of what can happen to your health and well being as a result of drinking.
I wasn't sure what type of product to package at first. I thought they I could possibly apply my concept to a range of products such as wine, beer bottle, beer can, keg, liquor bottle etc. However I was running out of time due to the work and time i had to dedicate to my writing.
Through research I found that beer is the most popular form of alcohol is beer and therefor should be considered the most damaging regarding long term effects. Because of this I feel that concentrating on beer for this branding and packaging project. I did want to package a range of alcohol, but this doesn't really run true in todays market. Beer, wine and spirits are all from individual brands obviously because they are all produced in completely different ways.
Because I want to create a kind of, almost novelty, brand I should concentrate on one product. If I was simply creating health warning based packing similar to that being proposed for cigarette packing, then it would be different.

INITIAL IDEAS
I felt that having the beer packaged in a drip would be a great symbolism in showing were the consumer could end up in a state were their life depended on a simple bag of medicine.
A well as having the produce packaged in this way, this could also allow me to experiment with how this product is carried and how the point of ill health caused by alcohol can be translated through how it is presented and how it could be carried.
I started to look at possibilities regarding the packaging for this concept. I liked the idea of having the drips stored, presented and carried in a wooden crate similar to how beer is traditionally packed and carried.
Instead of the beer sitting upright in the crateI thought it would be interesting to hang the drips in a wooden create so they are still presented in a way that is relatable to how they are used in hospitals.
This could either be done with the box landscape and open on the outside like shown by the top sketch, or it could be the crate held upside down with the handle attached to the flat bottom. This way the drips hand from the upside down crate.
I initially liked this idea, however there was no where I could find iv drips to buy. I couldn't even find a novelty one unfortunately.
I found this type of packaging for liquid that looked a little like an IV drip, however after making an enquiry I could only buy such a product in bulk and not in small numbers. I could photoshop the product, however I don't feel that this is a viable option as I want a physical product.
I found these kind of drips that actually use bottles, mostly plastic these days, but i though that this would be an option when trying to include the concept of an iv drip. I thought about using the same ideas as about, however, using beer bottles, I don't think they would look enough like a drip. I also think the second packaging idea might just look like a set of udders!

PROGRESS
Because I was starting to run out of time, I decided to simply package alcohol in a more traditional sense. This way I feel that the produce can sit on the shelf like any other bottle, it would make the realisation a little more impactful.
If it is something that can be introduced on the market properly and fully functional, the association will help to make the point.
I looked at different ways in which I could wrap up a bottle so that on the inside, there was all the negative ad explicit imagery, however on the outside the packaging looked intriguing and inviting.
This sketch shows that the bottle is completely wrapped and the band round the middle with the name on is glued onto the bottle. When the outer, luxurious packaging is peeled back and removed, the belly band remains but in the midst of all the negative and off putting imagery.
I really like this type of packaging and how the outer packaging almost resembles and brown bag. This gives a sense of concealment and a guilty pleasure. A sticker on the bottom would help to close the paper shell and would also contain product information.
I decided to experiment a little with these ideas to see how practical they are and wether or not they could be excited in a professional way. This would also be an opportunity to look at logos and see which of the ones I have been working on would be suited to the product.
I first wrapped a bottle to get an idea of measurements. I only had A4 paper available to me at this time so I used this to get an idea. to cover ill of the bottle I would have to use A3. Normal paper was a little to stiff to fold around the bottle properly. When printing i would have to see james about the thinnest paper he had in order for me to be able to wrap the bottle neatly.
I like the type with this logo because I feel as though it looks like a beer brand kind of typeface. However the design seems a lille to big for the width of the bottle. The line design around the image was simply to gage an area were, if wanted or needed, I could add additional aesthetics.
I tried the logo in a simple black colour, however, I feel that for a more luxurious feel, I could use gold foil as a way to intrigue and appeal.
This design takes the logo and enlarges it to almost create a pattern that takes up a lot of the wrap. Im not so fond of this aesthetic.
I created this design using an image of a rash caused by alcohol use that I found through my research of symptoms. I kind of liked how the imagery looked luxurious but in a twisted sense due to the off putting image used with the pattern.
I tried and teated this design of wrap around the bottle. Again i feel that the imagery is too big and the rash image is a little to big and spaced out and large to understand what it actually is.
i also feel that this typeface looks a little to feminine.
I showed this design to some of my peers in the studio, they liked the design ads they originally though that the rash image was actually water droplets on the paper. This way I feel that this imagery could draw in the audience but then give that sense of realisation and repulsiveness that I am looking to achieve in order to put off the consumer.
I adapted the label a little and adjusted the typeface here. I do like the concept behind this type of label how ever I am not satisfied with the aesthetic. I think that this is because the mix of photographic imagery and digitalised logo do not mix very well.
I felt that even the thinest paper I could get for my printer was too thick. I thought about sing tissue paper but i was unsure on how I could implement a design onto this kind of material.
I looked online to see it there was anywhere that would be able to do this when I came across a tutorial that would allow me to do this at home.
I used this method at home and it worked a charm. I feel that this material is a lot more malleable and will look a lot more professional and clean that folded paper.

STICKER PRINTING.
Because I wanted to have the knarly images underneath the appealing packaging, I wanted to see if I could get suck images added to sticker paper. If I could I would like to see how imagery could be printed directly onto a bottle however this is not available to me at this time.
I went to James in the print room and asked him about sticker printing. originally I wanted to print this imagery on to see through sticker paper, however he did not have any in stock. James stated that if i wanted to print photographic images, white sticker paper would be better as the colours would show up better.
I started looking at how I could present such images on to stickers. These are a mix of images that I found while researching into the effete of alcohol.
I got these sticks printed on a3. I was a little concerned straight away because the wight of the stock seemed very heavy and I was worried that this would effect how I could wrap the bottle. However the sticker did have backing on it so I thought that this would be the reason.
Unfortunately, the sticker paper was too heavy to wrap around the bottle. It really looked awful so i had completely get rid of this idea and re-think my approach.
